Best Value

Wise_Emergency_Meals

There are several companies out there that provide dehydrated and freeze dried food storage options. This method of food storage makes food storage simple.

Dehydrated foods are the least expensive, but in my opinion freeze dried foods offer the best value. Personally, I prefer the ready made meals with meat that are available with freeze dried foods. The extra dollar per meal is worth it to me for the convenience, variety, and time saved, and knowledge that my kids will eat it.

For others, dehydrated foods might be the best values. Others might be more patient in preparing food, and would enjoy having “raw” ingredients that provide more flexibility.

The best years supply food storage solution is probably to have some of each: several months supply of freeze dried food storage, several months worth of dehydrated food storage, and a few months supply of traditional food storage and canned foods.

Which Freeze Packed Food Storage Provider Offers the Best Value?

Of the different food storage providers I am affiliated with, for long term food storage, Wise Food Storage is the best value per meal. With their 4,320 “Adult” Serving package, the cost per meal is just $1.52. Wise Food Storage also has more convenient packaging for storage, more flexible ordering options, and can offer free shipping.

Food Insurance, and Daily Bread are the “average” freeze dried food storage providers. They aren’t as cheap as Wise, and they don’t offer nearly as much food as Mountain House. When you purchase the large packages through Daily Bread and FoodInsurance.com your average cost per meal is around $2.53. That’s more than a dollar more per meal than Wise Food Storage.

Mountain House Freeze dried food storage is probably the best Value in terms of Food per Dollar. Mountain House’s packages are more expensive, but they provide full meals, including side dishes and deserts, and not just “ration” portions. Mountain Houses packages are more expensive, but for the price of food per pound and the amount of calories provided in each meal, it provides the best value. The Mountain House “Platinum Reserve Pack” and the “Food Insurance 1264 Entree Pack” Both have about the same cost ~$3,350. Food Insurances package is supposed to feed a family of 5 two meals a day for six months, whereas the Mountain House “Platinum Reserve Pack” is only said to feed a family of 4 for three months. It would appear that Food Insurance provides the better value, but when you look at the product weight, the Mountain House Package weighs 520 pounds, more than twice the weight of the 252 pound Food Insurance Package. So if value is determined by the “weight of food” per dollar, Mountain House clearly offers the best value.

Mountain house also has some options where you can purchase just entrees. The Mountain House Year Supply Entree only packages have a cost of about $2.76 per meal.

I also have purchased food storage from Daily Bread (the one endorsed by Glenn Beck), and its packages, pricing, and product appears to be exactly identical to Food Insurance. The only difference is the marketing of the products. Daily Bread, appears to have a slightly lower price, but then they charge you for shipping, and for the additional “drink packages.” FoodInsurance.com (which is endorsed by Sean Hannity), automatically includes these items in their pricing. The FoodInsurance packages automatically include an emergency add on as well, these types of items are “discounted” upgrades with Daily Bread. They are really apples to apples, just marketed slightly differently. Either way, all are outstanding products, and could come in most handy in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.

One Comment for “Best Value”

Hummm…. Wise Foods are dehydrated. If you have to boil water and let the food sit in the boiling water, its dehydrated. Wise puts all there money into marketing instead of a decent product, so that they can compete with real freeze dried food companies out there like mountain house. Don’t be fooled. Freeze dried food comes in a #10 can not a bucket.
